Meet Heena ~ our longest running employee

Image
It's hard to believe but Miss Heena has been working at MMF for over 15 years! Yikes, where has the time gone. Let's find out a little more about this hard working woman! MMF: You have a cute British accent. Where are you from? Heena:   Although I was born in Nairobi, Kenya but then I moved to London when I was 4 years old - hence the British Accent. MMF: When did you move to the United States and why? Heena: I came here in 1993 and moved with my husband! MMF: You have 2 beautiful children; a girl who's in her last year of college and son who just started his second year (both Rutgers - go Scarlet Knights). What is your favorite part about having two kids in college. Heena: I'm love having a bit more time for myself but I miss then a lot. It's a bit easier to just cook for myself and my husband. I'm proud of the adults they are becoming. MMF: What's your favorite part about working in the Flower Shop? Heena: I love everything. I love the flow

Meet Our Newest Designer Alicia!

Image
If you ask me what is one of the most stressful parts about running my business, it would be finding talented, hard working staff with a can do attitude. Honestly, we have been searching for someone for more than 2 years and then along comes Alicia who not only is the best fit but goes above and beyond what we could have hoped for.  MMF: Alicia, we're so happy to have you join us at Monday Morning Flowers (MMF). Tell us how you became interested in the flower business! Alicia: My career started as a cashier at a local supermarket but the floral manager asked me to help out in that department one Mother's Day and the rest is history. That was 3 years ago.  MMF: What have you been doing to further your design skills? Alicia:   I'm currently attending Buck's County Community College and taking classes in their AIFD (American Institute of Floral Design) Floral Design Certification Program. I've already taken basic and intermediate design classes along with

Scenes from the Shop in December

Image
December is a fun month to be working here at the flower shop for multiple reasons but the main one is that our days are so varied. One day we might be making 34 cookie bouquets for a corporate client , like I'm doing below.  Or we may be making 24 Chocolate Sled Gift Baskets to be delivered to the Pavillions, like Alanna is working on below.   Or perhaps we making really pretty centerpieces for a holiday party, like Holly is doing below.   Not to mention hosting a design class where the students have fun and make new friends.   And at the end of the class the students pose with their creations!   Design Rosy makes boxwood tree after boxwood tree , all created by hand, one piece of foliage at a time and then decorated for the holiday.  Whatever we work on at the shop, including sympathy designs to show love to grieving families, our days in December are extremely varied and rewarding. While others might be slowing down at work, we are just gearing up

The Best Job Ever ~ Floral Designer

Image
I'm not going to lie, sometimes working in a flower shop is no "tip toe through the tulips". Really, it's no "walk in the park" and it certainly isn't for the faint of heart. I'll bet you'd never think that working in a floral shop is fast paced and stressful, but at times, it can be. When those phones get to ringing and the door bell jingles with a walk in customer and the driver is waiting for you to finish that floral design on your station that you started 30 minutes ago... well, let's just say being surrounded by absolute beauty make the day a bit more bearable.  One minute you are helping someone grieve the loss of a friend or family member and the next call could have you talking to someone who wants to wish their 90 year old grandmother a very happy birthday. Or perhaps your brother just made you an Aunt! Going from one emotional extreme to another can take it's toll but knowing that what we create and the personal attention we g

Mountain Mint

Image
Over the last few weeks, we've been getting in a lot of luscious and aromatic Mountain Mint.  As I was putting together some wildflower inspired pieces for a shower this past week I got to wondering about this flowering plants possible medicinal uses aside from its obvious aesthetic uses. Love the look of Mountain Mint and smells amazing too; such a fun design element!  Mountain-mint is edible and medicinal, raw or cooked the flower buds and leaves are edible and have a hot, spicy, mint-like flavor that makes a great spice or seasoning for meat. The fresh or dried leaves are brewed into a refreshing mint-like medicinal herb tea that is alternative (for that run down feeling), analgesic, antiseptic, diaphragmatic, and tonic. The medicinal tea is used in alternative medicine in the treatment of menstrual disorders, indigestion, mouth sores and gum disease, colic, coughs, colds, chills and fevers.     A strong decoction is medicinal if poured over festering wounds. My Life as a Florist ~ a repost

Image
Back in 2009 I was asked to write a blog for Flower Shop Network called "Bloomin' Blog" and I really had fun writing it. Fast forward 4 years to 2013 and nothing has really changed so I thought it might be fun to re-post. Hope you enjoy!  Me ~ oh how I have changed in the last 4 years I've  noticed over the years that what I love most about my job is something that an average person usually hates. What is that, you wonder? It’s diversity, change, constant evolution and sometimes even chaos. The day in the life of a florist is anything but boring or mundane. I’ll bet if you asked someone what they thought it would be like to be a florist for the day, most would answer with cliche. The most common ones  I've  heard over the years is “It must be fun to play with flowers all day”. Play? Who said anything about playing. Last time I looked it was my job to be a florist, not my hobby. Another personal favorite is “It must be so calm and relaxing being surro

Designer Norman

Image
Ok, don't tell Designer Norman this (because his ego is big enough) but folks who view his online photos and videos just love him. One fan said "When I see his smile, I can't help but smile with him". So yes, I'm a sucker for Norman too because when I'm not wanting to choke him, he makes me laugh. If you have never seen one of his videos, you are in for a treat. All it takes is Shop Coordinator Sheryl prompting him and off he goes as you can see from the videos below. If you want a chuckle, they are worth a look!

An Employee Gathering

Image
We would be less than truthful if we said that the last 2 years or so have not been a hard time for our company. The recession took it's toll and with other flower shops closing around us, we are grateful to not only be surviving but thriving. This week we brought together almost our whole team (driver Joe and sales associate Kristine we unable to attend) for a business celebration event! We had a great time and thank you to Salt Creek Grille here in the Princeton Forretal Village for doing a fantastic hosting our meeting!  It's always fun getting a group shot as we are rarely in the same place at the same time! Mom and Dad Vinicombe even made an appearance (Arlene works in our office part time assisting Kevin) and they even brought the grandkids - our niece and nephew Mary Ann and Markie!    Shop Coordinator Sheryl, Driver Jeff, Sales Associate Melissa and holiday driver Kyle pose for me!  Driver Allan, who has been with our company for over 6 years attempts to w
