What do color and flowers have in common? Quite a bit!!

Image
The health benefits of living with flowers are many and the colors can mean so much. According to a 10-month behavioral study at Rutgers University, flowers have an immediate impact on happiness and a long-term positive effect on moods. Study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious, and agitated when presented with flowers. Color plays a strong role in this reaction: • Red has a positive effect on the immune system and an energizing influence on fatigue and exhaustion. • When you see pink , you often feel joy. Bright hues of this color increase blood pressure, heartbeat and respiration, as well, which leads to energy. • Violet calms the body and mind and nourishes creativity. • Yellow , the happy color, encourages communication while it stimulates memory and the nervous system. • Orange’s psychological profile includes promoting optimism, determination, and success. On the other hand, it also urges viewers to socialization, so be sparing with this colo...

Our December Instagram Feed

Image
Another month of fun Instagram photos. Thought I'd share the behind the scenes from December!  Here a photographer posts a photo of a bridal bouquet we created in November and we share it on our feed!  Our Princeton store decorated for the holiday season!  Kevin and Alanna build a balloon archway for a non-profit awards breakfast in Woodbridge. This is a new frame for us and it really turned out great. It's 12 feet tall!!  A winter wedding of teals and white, snowflakes and birch branches at Old York Country Club in Bordentown, NJ.  A 3 foot tall boxwood tree decorated with real peacock feathers  for the Princeton Residence Inn. Even the ribbon had the peacock feather design!  We held 3 design classes during the month of December including this wreath making class. The students really did a great job.  Design Alanna went out to a club meeting for a demonstration and then then attendees bought what she made.  ...

Scenes from the Flower Shop in Early August

Image
The designers were especially creative this week! Love the pairing of this vase and graceful orchid designed by Alanna.  Designer Holly went hog wild with the brightly colored flowers filling the cooler with arrangements for our walk in customers at the Princeton store.   It's always a treat to bring in a case of fresh cut phaleanopsis orchids like these. They are a dream to design with.   Our designer had fun playing with these colorful blooms. Don't you love the silk flowers in the base of the vase? This would be the perfect floral arrangement to send to a little girl for her birthday !   We also had fun creating this Pave style design. Don't you love the way she layered the colors. We especially love the playful grasses dancing over the arrangement !  Which one was your favorite? We'd love to know!!

The Art of Floral Design

Image
We understand the average consumer sending flowers , loves the idea of "seeing" what they will be sending out as their floral gift but the flip side, is that each floral arrangement is hand crafted and hand designed. Matching pictures on our website requires both attention to detail and the having in stock at all time wide selection of flowers . Whew, that's hard work!!  Above is our designers version of one of our best sellers on our website and I have to say that not only did she do a great job, I think the actual arrangement she created far exceeded the "stock photo" arrangement we display on our website. Imagine having this beautifully fresh floral design arriving to your desk? We think it would make you might happy, right?  In my next blog, I'll show some of our unique and one of a kind arrangements created for our customers this week! Until then, feel free to check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/localflorist or our website at ww...

O magazine Sings the Praises of Flowers

Image
If a full page showing big, bright pink peonies doesn’t stop  Redbook  magazine readers in their tracks while flipping through the April issue, then the headline, “This month, bring him flowers” will make them do a double take, thanks to SAF’s public relations efforts — which also resulted in a prime placement for flowers in the March issue of O, The Oprah Magazine.  The eye-catching blooms and enticing headline in beckons readers to findings from two Rutgers University research studies on the benefits of floral gifts. “A Rutgers University study found that men are noticeably sweeter to women who give them blooms,” the article states explaining one finding from the SAF-backed  Emotional Impact of Flowers Study . It goes on to quote lead researcher Jeannette Haviland-Jones, Ph.D.: “‘Plus, people automatically like you more, and think you’re sensitive and thoughtful.’” Haviland-Jones is referring to results from the  Power of Giving Flowers Study , which w...

Spring is Party Time

Image
Spring has finally arrived. Goodness, we never thought it would come but with it comes so many fun events for us to create centerpieces for. Don't you love these cube centerpieces of blue hydrangea, dahlias, berries and bells of Ireland? They just scream Spring to me!  These were for a baby shower.  Wow, cube arrangements still remain popular and these pretty in pink centerpieces include pink roses, gerbera daisies and lilies. They smell good too! These were for an Anniversary party.    Who says floral centerpieces have to be huge and expensive? These colorful little bubble bowls will look amazing on the tables and would be perfect in any setting for any kind of party .   These sweet centerpieces have hydrangeas, roses, bells with carnations and those bright colors are sure to light up the room.  Want to see more of our event floral centerpiece design? Let Us Create Something Just For You

Image
Please, please, can we please? We love our website  but sometimes have to create the same floral designs over and over is not so much fun. That's why we love the opportunity to design fun, funky, festive and elegant arrangements for our cooler displays. This is where we get to show customers running in for a quick gift how talented we really are! Don't you just love this simple orange basket arangement. Big is not always better. I love this arrangement above done in a simple glass bowl with "Free Spirt" roses, hydrangeas and veronica. All dutch flowers, so elegant but fun don't you think?    Imagine getting this for your birthday. Love the balloon box! Adorable cube arrangements that look good enough to eat! Love this tropical styled arrangement with river cane, roses, fatsia leaves and even a cute butterfly. Elegant for a foyer table, this makes a really elegant gift . I loved this arrangement that design Rocio made. Three roses, an orchi...

What's New at the Shop - January 2012

Image
I have to say, that this past year we had lots of fun bringing in new giftware items. The different gifts we brought in for Christmas sold so well that we decided to really punch up the volume of gifts at the shop this spring. That being said, it didn't take me long to hop on my favorite gift websites and stock up. Coffee mugs sold extremely well for Christmas and so these mugs above should be popular to. My favorite one is actually hidden in the back and says "Stop me before I volunteer again". :o)  These little kitty banks are so cute and will be affordable additions to flower arrangements and goodie bags for birthdays and new babies, don't you think?  The wine glasses we had this past holiday sold completely out and so having these everyday styles will be a great additon to our giftware. These glasses have funny sayings and colorful designs. Personally, I love anything with poka dots!  I brought in these lanterns for the spring and couldn't help bu...

It's Boss's Week!

Image
Ok, don't laugh! Yes, there is a holiday known as Boss's Day. According to Wikipedia  Boss's Day (also known as Bosses Day or National Boss Day) is a secular holiday celebrated on October 16 in the United States. It has traditionally been a day for employees to thank their boss for being kind and fair throughout the year. The history of Boss's Day is that Patricia Bays Haroski registered "National Boss' Day" with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 1958. She was working as a secretary for State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois at the time and chose October 16 because she forgot that the birthday of her boss, who was her father, was actually on the 16th. Four years later in 1962, Illinois Governor Otto Kerner backed Haroski's registration and officially proclaimed the day. National Boss' Day has become an international celebration in recent years and now is observed in countries such as Australia, India and South Africa and very recen...

The Power of White Flowers

Image
Not sure, what color to choose when sending flowers or even planning a party or wedding? It's so hard to decide but truth be told, classic white is always nice both because it can be clean and modern or traditional and elegant. We recently created these pretty wedding bouquets. They were so simple but they looked amazing for a summer time wedding. Need to send flowers for a sympathy? The color white symbolizes wholeness, openness, truth and kindness. The color of white in context of flowers means elements of innocence, humility, and reverence, white flowers evoke simple beauty. When asked, most people will tell you that white flowers are beautiful so why not send them for a get well, anniversary or a birthday? The next time you are in doubt of what color flowers to use or send, never forget the power of white! Would you like to see more examples of our wedding designs?
