Teaching Floral Design to Seniors

Image
One of the best parts about being a florist is sharing the gift of flowers with others. Going out to Senior Centers and Schools are one of favorite things to do, especially at the start of summer. This past week Designer Alanna and Designer Alex lead a class of over 50 senior citizens at the Plainsboro Community Center. Each participant was able to create their very own floral basket.  Sharing the basic principles of design using hardy but colorful blooms, Alanna lead the group in making their own basket centerpieces. Using the colorful combination of daisies, baby's breath and mini carnations, each student took home their creation.   Interested in having us come out to your location to teach a class? Contact us at 609-520-2005 to discuss and we'd be thrilled to work with you!  Don't forget our next floral design class at our Princeton Flower Shop is June 25th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. A few openings are still available so call today to reserve or click here to

The Best Job Ever ~ Floral Designer

I'm not going to lie, sometimes working in a flower shop is no "tip toe through the tulips". Really, it's no "walk in the park" and it certainly isn't for the faint of heart. I'll bet you'd never think that working in a floral shop is fast paced and stressful, but at times, it can be. When those phones get to ringing and the door bell jingles with a walk in customer and the driver is waiting for you to finish that floral design on your station that you started 30 minutes ago... well, let's just say being surrounded by absolute beauty make the day a bit more bearable.  One minute you are helping someone grieve the loss of a friend or family member and the next call could have you talking to someone who wants to wish their 90 year old grandmother a very happy birthday. Or perhaps your brother just made you an Aunt! Going from one emotional extreme to another can take it's toll but knowing that what we create and the personal attention we g

What Never to Say to Your Local Florist

Image
A bit tongue in cheek but truly, if you want to get on the wrong side of your local florist; these will do it! Are your flowers fresh? Believe it or not, most retail florists get fresh flowers into their shops (like we do) at least 4 to 5 days a week. Yes, our flowers are fresh. Do you sell flowers? We get this all the time. Our signage says we are a florist, we have the word Flower in our company name and folks still walk past our 9'X12' refrigerator and past many buckets of fresh flowers and ask this question. That's like asking a restaurant if they sell food. The answer is YES! That's what we do!   Can you make me a pretty arrangement? No, we specialize in ugly arrangements!! Just kidding but we think all flowers are pretty, a better description of what you might want the flowers to look like is better than asking this question. What is ugly to you might be stunning to another person; beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Being a bit clear about your expectat

From The Design Bench in Spring

I always love talking about how flowers are an artform. I think folks sometimes forget that each and everyone is made, made care by a talented foral designer. Here our designer makes spring wedding bouquets for bride Katie. This huge glass bowl was filled with many fresh stems of imported Dutch Tulips, lily grasses and fatsia leaves. Designer Norman always has fun with designs like this and we are sure it made for a big impact when this amazing arrangement was received! Sometimes we are matching an arrangement on our website but the most favorite thing for our designers to do is create something custom, like this arrangement. At this time of year the tulips are plentiful but their season is just about over. We also bring tulips in from California, Canada and Virginia. I think they are one of the most beloved flowers we work with in Spring. Folks like Shop Coordinator Sheryl and your truly help out during busy time. Sheryl especially loves doing Gourmet Baskets and she our r
