The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Image
Posting a bit late but HAPPY HOLIDAYS! The shop has been very busy since the beginning of December and we are so grateful for all our customers who allow us to make a living doing what we love to do. As always we've been helping folks express their feelings and with this Winter season still comes birthday's, get well's and unfortunately sympathy's along with the festive occasions of Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. It's always fun to see the holiday trends and this year traditional centerpieces were the best sellers such as this design created by our lead designer. We also had many folks choosing festive basket designs such as this Berries and Spices which included cinnamon sticks.  We even had some fun with Succulent plants by using fun Merry Christmas boxes as pots.  Although not as popular as previous years, we still made a fair amount of Boxwood trees. This one will be brightening someone's day when it's delivered on Christmas

Feeling Thankful

Image
Happy Thanksgiving! The holiday means different things to different people. Working in the flower business it's about helping other have a festive and happy day. Our designers have been hard at working creating some pretty floral designs in all shapes and sizes. This pretty centerpiece was priced at only $24.99!   This design is called Skillman Sophistication.   We sold so many ceramic pumpkins this holiday!  Another pretty centerpiece with sunflowers, roses, statice, pods and eucalyptus.   Cornucopias are popular ever year and this year was no exception.   Many of our designs were styled as low and long designs, perfect for long tables. Which one is your favorite?

Lighting and Your Wedding Flowers

Image
Are you afraid of using vibrant colors for your wedding? Don't be. Remember, all those close up photos that we florists love taking of our wedding designs are not really "true to life" how your guests will see your flowers. Most guests will be seeing you from 15 feet away or more and other than the close up shots your photographer will get on your wedding day, your photos will mostly be taken in full sun from a distance.  Take the example below. On the left and bottom right was a wedding bouquet we made about 3 years ago. Picture taken from a distance or in full outdoor lighting tend to look lighter than close up shots not in direct sun, as in the photo top right. If you are looking for vibrant tones, I usually advise turning up the color at least 1 or 2 shades, especially if you are being married in an outdoor setting or expect to take lots of photos outside. During the summer, the heat and sunshine really go into maximum brightness, so taking care to go a bit riche

Mountain Mint

Image
Over the last few weeks, we've been getting in a lot of luscious and aromatic Mountain Mint.  As I was putting together some wildflower inspired pieces for a shower this past week I got to wondering about this flowering plants possible medicinal uses aside from its obvious aesthetic uses. Love the look of Mountain Mint and smells amazing too; such a fun design element!  Mountain-mint is edible and medicinal, raw or cooked the flower buds and leaves are edible and have a hot, spicy, mint-like flavor that makes a great spice or seasoning for meat. The fresh or dried leaves are brewed into a refreshing mint-like medicinal herb tea that is alternative (for that run down feeling), analgesic, antiseptic, diaphragmatic, and tonic. The medicinal tea is used in alternative medicine in the treatment of menstrual disorders, indigestion, mouth sores and gum disease, colic, coughs, colds, chills and fevers.     A strong decoction is medicinal if poured over festering wounds. Crushed f

Peaches and Pinks

Image
Peach and Pink Wedding Flowers never quite go out of style (thank goodness) but when ever we create floral designs with these coordinator colors, they always manage to be a show stopper.  Bride Emem looked amazing holding her peaches, creams and pink bridal bouquet made from roses, garden roses, hydrangeas, peony and orchids.   The brides maids carried creations of cream hydrangea accented with pink and peach roses and pink cymbidium orchids.   Elegant brandy snifters filled with peach and pink flowers with ivy trails and curly willow loops placed on raspberry colored table linens. We loved the setting at Paradise Vineyards and a special thank you goes out to Jeri Houseworth for her amazing photography!

Blue Dyed Orchid Wedding

Image
Folks are loving blue flowers and at the top of their " Wish List " are these amazing blue dyed dendrobium orchids. Last weekends wedding was a mix of common flowers (baby's breath) and unique blooms (these amazing stem dyed beauties) and what a display they presented for Marisa's wedding at the The Palace in Somerset.  The first element that guests would see when they arrived was the silver archway and golden chairs that were decorated both baby's breath and blue orchids. As the bride walked down the aisle, she carried a cascade bouquet of baby and tea white roses, stephanotis and baby's breath, which her maids carried hand tied bouquets of just baby's breath.  As the guests entered they ballroom they were greeted with elegant crystal trees adorned with cascades of blue orchids. Sprinkled crystals around the base helped catch the light from the votive candles while pin lighting from above helped the tree sparkle. For anyone bride looking for

Summer Floral Design with Margaritas

Image
What do Flowers and Margarita's have in common? Apparently at Monday Morning Flowers they have quite a bit. Our Summer Floral Design Class appears to have been a big hit with the ladies who attended. Even my Mother in Law got into the act and had a blast.  As will all our classes, we start off with food and drinks, giving the attendees a little time to mingle, network and shop.   This class included $15 worth of Monday Morning Money for the ladies to spend however they wanted. Candles, hand bags and plants seemed to be the best sellers that night.  Next comes the design part the program . This class had us learning how to design using colored floral foam in a margarita glass. The students really had fun and Designer Nicole did a great job leading them through with tips and tricks.   As you can see, even the young girls had fun! Future designers perhaps?  Who wouldn't laugh during a class with such bright colored flowers. Well, the margarita's helped!

Who Says Hydrangea is Boring

Image
Who says Hydrangea is boring? Not us and not with these fun varieties that just arrived as fresh cut flowers. The one below has shades from green to mid purple and is called Expression Classic.  This variety is called Magical Coral and both come through the Dutch Market to our stores. They last forever and dry just the way you seem them. Don't you want some for your home?    To see these and more of our design ideas be sure to visit our website at www.sendingsmiles.com or our facebook page at www.facebook.com/localflorist

Flowers, Family and the Holidays

Image
We love holidays here at the shop, not only because they can be a very busy time for us (which means business is good) but we love what our flowers "bring" to these special days. Even as florists we love having and sharing our floral designs with family over the holidays. Take my niece Mary Ann who absolutely adored this "bunny" floral arrangement. Not only did she carry it around but she was seen petting the "bunny" many times in the course of the Easter celebration. How gratifying it was for me to provide her with this first floral experience.  The holiday dinner table wouldn't be complete without a floral centerpiece and gauging by how many Easter centerpieces we sold this year, our customers felt that same way. Who says kids don't appreciate flowers? My nephew carefully staged this display which include not only the floral centerpiece but also his Transformer and his Enterprise model. :)    If you didn't have flowers on your din

Delivering Smiles Since 1988

Image
Did you know that Monday Morning Flowers is 25 years old this year? Founded in 1988 ~ it's hard to believe. In some ways it feels like I've been in this business forever and in other ways, it's hard to believe it's been that long. Things sure have changed since the beginning but it's still all about the customer for me. Delivering Smiles, Delivering Satisfaction ~ each time, every time.  Thank you to all our past, present and future customers that allow us to do what we love ~ Helping You Send Someone a Smile !

Wedding Flowers ~ Just for the Day? You Bet!

Image
It's just for the day! Yikes, we cringe every time someone says that to us while discussing wedding flowers . It's usually followed by "I don't want to spend a lot of money on them". Everything for your wedding day is for the day - you'll wear your gown once (but it will be in pictures), you'll listen to the DJ and dance (memories of fun that will last a lifetime) and you'll enjoy delicious food and drinks (hm, where is that the next day?).  Yes, flowers don't live forever (neither do people) but they do bring much to the "table" literally with regards to your wedding day. Take this wedding for Rhiannon and Joe ~ we had so much fun creating these fun wine themed centerpieces. They provided the mason jars and boxes and we did the rest.  Obviously they not only looked pretty on the tables but look what they did when they got them home? More than "Just for the day" don't you agree?

Vintage Wedding Designs with Baby's Breath

Image
Here at the shop we are in love with Baby's Breath and lucky for us, our wedding couples are loving it too. What was once considered old is new again and rightly so with all the new varieties available all year long. In this short video I talk about how this lovely "accent" flower can be used in many different types of wedding floral designs, especially for weddings.

Waiting for Spring

Image
With Valentine's Day behind us we look forward to all the Spring flowers that will soon be filling the shop such as hyacinths, sweet peas, tulips and other fun blooms such as lavender statice, daffodils, lisianthus and more. My personal favorite colors are the pinks and purples and don't you just love those huge Japanese Sweet Pea that Kristin is holding? They are enormous and very long lasting.  Soon the Spring weddings will begin and it's been fun seeing the colors and flowers that are in demand for Spring weddings. I'll be sure to post them as the year moves along! For now, let's just breath deep and wait for Spring to arrive.

Living With Flowers - Adding a Little Flower Power

Image
Flower Power!  We all know that flowers are pretty but did you know that studies have shown that flowers are a very potent mood enhancer? Well, a study done by Rutgers University by Jeannette Haviland-Jones Professor of Psychology and her husband Terry McGuire, Professor of Genetics offer convincing evidence that flowers may be  potent mood elevators. I know my opinion might be suspect because I'm surrounded with beautiful flowers every day but it's fun knowing that the product that I petal, that provides my livelihood can be so powerful in making folks so happy ! Quoted from a Rutgers Blog called "Flower Power" this is what they found out during the study! "In the first of several double-blind studies performed in 2005, Haviland-Jones and her team presented participants with one of three gifts—a decorative candle, a fruit basket, and a floral bouquet—supposedly as a thank-you for taking part in a study on mood. The delivery people were really out to

Why You Should Order Your Valentine's Day Flower Early

Image
It's hard to believe that we are half way through January so that puts us less than 3 weeks to Valentine's Day . Now don't start cringing and getting all stressed out. Let's face it, we have a nice selection of lovely floral gifts on our website right now and if you order prior to February 1st, you pay our regular price on roses instead of the holiday pricing. Here's a tip for you, order early and save money. One less thing for you to do later. Here are some Valentine's Day Gift Ordering Tips for You! Valentine's Day is on a Thursday this year which leads us to believe it's going to be a busy one for us florists. I'm not sure if I want to cry or laugh about that! The truth is that there are more people that want to send flowers than florists that can deliver them. Oh and heaven forbid you order from those companies that ship flowers in a box. Do you really want your sweetie to get their Valentine's Day roses from the FedEX man? I don&

Another In Store Event - Scarf Tying

Image
Well, we had another fun event here at our Princeton Flower Shop  this past week! Scarf tying along with wine and cheese with 29 ladies in attendance. As you can tell by these smiling faces, the ladies had a great time!  Dear friend Ann (Ann and I have known each other for over 20 years) has always worn scarves so who better than to lead our discussion, right?   Wearing her signature fun colors, she showed us many fun ways to tie scarves of all different shapes and sizes.  Great customer Martha shows off what she learned!   Martha has been to every class we have had so far!  Ann leads a hands on session where folks tried their luck at using their owns scarves. Between the discussion and demonstrations the ladies took sips of wine and at some snacks including wonderful cheese from Tre Piani Restaurant.    Be sure to look for our next classes and a list can always be found on our Princeton Facebook Page and you can now reserve your place on our website !  Yup, that
