Mountain Mint

Over the last few weeks, we've been getting in a lot of luscious and aromatic Mountain Mint.  As I was putting together some wildflower inspired pieces for a shower this past week I got to wondering about this flowering plants possible medicinal uses aside from its obvious aesthetic uses.

Love the look of Mountain Mint and smells amazing too; such a fun design element!
Mountain-mint is edible and medicinal, raw or cooked the flower buds and leaves are edible and have a hot, spicy, mint-like flavor that makes a great spice or seasoning for meat. The fresh or dried leaves are brewed into a refreshing mint-like medicinal herb tea that is alternative (for that run down feeling), analgesic, antiseptic, diaphragmatic, and tonic. The medicinal tea is used in alternative medicine in the treatment of menstrual disorders, indigestion, mouth sores and gum disease, colic, coughs, colds, chills and fevers.

A strong decoction is medicinal if poured over festering wounds. Crushed flowers can be placed on tooth aches to kill pain almost instantly. Very aromatic, the herb can be used in potpourri or burned as incense. Placed in a muslin bag it can be used as a bath additive, and is said to be very soothing to irritated skin. It will freshen laundry when used in the dryer. Thrown in a drawer or trunk it will not only freshen clothing and blankets, but keep moths away. You can sprinkle it on carpets to freshen the whole house and it is said to be a good natural insecticide, the plant does repel insects and is good for use in the garden, and the crushed flowers can be rubbed on clothing to repel pests.

Mountain Mint grows very well in North America so if you ever have a chance to pick up some seeds, or see some on the side of the road or at the edge of the woods, or even see it in your fabulous custom arrangement from Monday Morning Flowers, go ahead and try some out, just make sure you wash it first!!

I love what I do!  Designing flowers is a true passion of mine but I especially love learning about the healing properties of the flowers, herbs, and plants that I deal with on a daily basis.  Nature truly is remarkable and I think the more natural remedies we can utilize, the healthier we will all be inside and out.
Mountain mint sits among other flowers in our coolers.
