Give the Carnations a Chance!

Image
When I started working at Monday Morning Flowers, I was your typical “no carnations please” kind of gal.  Thinking back, I didn't even really have a reason to dislike them other than their commonality, which is really a blessing rather than a curse.  Here are some fun things about carnations to take into consideration before you ask to leave the “carns” out: 1. T he Ultimate “Long Lasting” Flower :   Often people specify for a “long-lasting” arrangement – of course!   Who wants a floral design to last one day?!   When I ask what kind of flowers they like, a popular answer is Hydrangea.   It’s beautiful, yes, but long-lasting, not so much.   Carnations on the other hand – will last for weeks sometimes.   Change their water and they are the sure to keep up beautifully for much longer than most flowers, including your average rose. 2. No Need to Break the Bank :   We sell carnations for only $1.99 per stem.   They are afforda...

Carnations and Roses - Perfect Together

Image
Roses and Carnations are 2 of my favorite flowers and I especially love them together. One of this weekends weddings has us using both types of flowers in brides maids bouquets.   The difference in texture and the slight shading difference will looks especially pretty in pictures when taken from a distance. In this case, the carnations also help with cost because our bride has quite a few attendants and needed to keep the cost down. To see these and more of our floral designs, be sure to hop over to our website at www.sendingsmiles.com  and check out some of our other blogs and videos  that talk about how to save money on your wedding flowers!

Cool Colored Carnations

Image
I love carnations. Ok, I just said that out loud and I'm not embarrassed or ashamed. What does the world have against carnations anyway. Look at these cool green ones that are now available. At one time if you wanted green carnations for St. Patrick's day you had to dye them but that's not longer the case. These awesome carnations are called "Prado" and are naturally a soft, minty green. What a wonderful shade used alone or with other colors. This cute "Beer Mug" created by Designer Holly is the perfect floral gift for St. Patrick's Day, don't you think? Here we are using the same Carnations to make pretty corsages for a corporate event. A touch of wax flowers and soft ribbon make for a very sweet corsage. Here is another shade of carnation that has almost an antique feel to them. A soft pink, with green margins, these corsages are for the winners of the Tribute to Women in Industry event being held at the Hyatt - Princeton today. How cute is ...

Fresh Flower Choices

Image
Today I was skimming through my Floral Management magazine and low and behold I spot an article singing the praises of one of my favorite flowers. The article talked about the variety of colors these wonderful flowers come in from dark, almost black blue-purple to mango hues with gold tips. Solid lime green and a yellow/pink bi color, not to mention dark, magenta purples. Wow, these flowers amaze me. They smell like heaven, they last for weeks in fresh clean water and the colors! How many flower varieties do you know that come in that kind of palate? Well, they are truly heavenly. I guess you are wondering what flower I am speaking of.... I speak of the lowly, misunderstood carnation. That's right, the carnation . Haven't we all be guilty of saying "make me a nice arrangement, but no carnations, please"? Well, perhaps the time has come to cut those words "No Carnations" from our floral vocabulary. Carnations, carnations, I want to sing their praise...
