Flower Centerpieces on a Tight Budget

Image
Would you like centerpieces at your next party but not sure if you can afford them? Here's some tips to keep the cost down and still have beautiful flowers! Be flexible on the flower selection; the most economical way to order flowers is to ask for flowers in a color theme, not by flower varieties. As florists, we buy flowers week in and week out directly from our farm sources. They often come in solid flower types but in mixed colors. Buying this way keeps the cost down because we are ordering large quantities in advance allows the farms to sell a lot in whatever color they have blooming at that time. When a florist buys in small quantities by certain colors, the price per stem can be double or even triple the case pricing. Keep in mind, that this only works for smaller orders. If you need 25 centerpieces that all look the same, special buying may be necessary, thus raising the cost.  Let the designer suggest what will give you the biggest presentation given your budget. If t

No Two the Same ~ Our 3 for $20 Bouquets

Image
One year ago we introduced our new "3 for $20" bunch program into the shop. 7 days a week you can come in to choose the prettiest fresh flowers ~ one bunch for $10 or three bunches for $20. Mixing and matching is super easy and we have almost as much fun seeing what the customer put together as they do!  Once the customer decides on their flower choices, one of our designers hand ties the bouquet together, wraps in pretty paper and adds a delicate ribbon bow.  Sunflowers, orange carnations and white daisies. Don't you love the combo?  White daisy, green hydrangea and pink alstroemeria.

Dare to Be Different ~ there are multiple right answers

Image
I was listening to the radio coming in to work today and heard a great comment that inspired this blog. "There are multiple right answers". It didn't really apply to the flower business specifically but after seeing this bridal bouquet being created today, it made me think how often folks think that there is a right or wrong answer when choosing flowers. Whether it's a wedding or other event, there are many choices and multiple right choices. Take this bouquet for example. The bride is truly a free spirit and allowed her friend (our designer Alanna) to create her bouquet. Kate loves everything natural (she's a Vegan who runs a rescue farm for animals) and is wearing a Chakra Crown to her wedding. Imagine her delight when she sees that Alanna has added healing stone and crystals to her bouquet? Is this right for everyone? Would Kate love this bouquet if it did not have the stones? I think we know the answer but how awesome is that she trusts her friend to cr

Long Lasting Flowers

Image
Do you ever think, "I'm not going to buy flowers because they don't last long enough"? If so you are not buying the right flowers. At our shop we sell a mixture of unique and common blooms and some last longer than others. Here are a few example of flowers that can not only brighten up your home but will last 2 weeks or longer! Protea ~  considered a tropical flowers native to South Africa, these funky and fun flowers last for weeks and weeks. No only are they unique but they come in cool colors like yellow, orange and red! The cost per stem is a bit high but you don't need many to make a statement.  Carnations ~  before you think or say "No Carnations" you need to think again. Not only do these fluffy blooms last a long time, they come in amazing colors. Just a few in a short vase with fresh water every few days can last 2 to 3 weeks!  Daisies ~  now these are not your grannies daisies. These "Micro Poms" (as they are calle

Tulips or Should We Say Tulip

Image
As a floral shop owner, I love flowers but it's true, as the cobbler has no shoes, often I don't bring flowers home. I probably shouldn't admit that but because I'm surrounded by gorgeous blooms all day long and work 12 hour days, it often doesn't occur to me to grab a bunch when I head out for the evening. Yesterday as the hubby and I closed up for the night, I grabbed a bunch of tulips (one of my all time favorites to bring home) and after cooking and eating dinner, I pulled out a favorite vase to arrange them.  While doing so, I broke a head ~ Oh no! Never fear, look how sweet this single bloom looks in a cute little vase. I posted this picture on my Facebook and within minutes had 20 likes. The power of flowers. Sometimes all it takes is one single flower to brighten a day.  Do you currently follow us on Social Media? Balloons are Therapeutic~ by Kevin

Image
Balloons can be therapeutic! So far this has been a very busy year for our Company installing Balloon Décor. If you follow us on Facebook , Instagram , Twitter or various other Social media sites I'm sure you've seen the many posts and pictures of our Balloon decorations.   Recently, I was on site creating a balloon arch and as always, many people stop by to ask questions about what we do, how we do it, how long we've been Balloon decorators etc. Every time I stop and talk to the curious onlookers I notice one thing in common - everyone is smiling as they look at the Balloons ! This made me think how cool our profession is and also how much fun and pleasure it brings our customers. Some of the comments and questions I've heard from people have been: That's so cool. I'd love to do that. I remember when I was a kid..... My Uncle, Father, Brother use to give me a balloon every.... I love Balloons That's my favorite color. Ho

Teaching Floral Design to Seniors

Image
One of the best parts about being a florist is sharing the gift of flowers with others. Going out to Senior Centers and Schools are one of favorite things to do, especially at the start of summer. This past week Designer Alanna and Designer Alex lead a class of over 50 senior citizens at the Plainsboro Community Center. Each participant was able to create their very own floral basket.  Sharing the basic principles of design using hardy but colorful blooms, Alanna lead the group in making their own basket centerpieces. Using the colorful combination of daisies, baby's breath and mini carnations, each student took home their creation.   Interested in having us come out to your location to teach a class? Contact us at 609-520-2005 to discuss and we'd be thrilled to work with you!  Don't forget our next floral design class at our Princeton Flower Shop is June 25th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. What Never to Say to Your Local Florist

Image
A bit tongue in cheek but truly, if you want to get on the wrong side of your local florist; these will do it! Are your flowers fresh? Believe it or not, most retail florists get fresh flowers into their shops (like we do) at least 4 to 5 days a week. Yes, our flowers are fresh. Do you sell flowers? We get this all the time. Our signage says we are a florist, we have the word Flower in our company name and folks still walk past our 9'X12' refrigerator and past many buckets of fresh flowers and ask this question. That's like asking a restaurant if they sell food. The answer is YES! That's what we do!   Can you make me a pretty arrangement? No, we specialize in ugly arrangements!! Just kidding but we think all flowers are pretty, a better description of what you might want the flowers to look like is better than asking this question. What is ugly to you might be stunning to another person; beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Being a bit clear about your expectat

A Weekend of Summer Weddings

Image
Today's weddings were so pretty we had to share. I know you may get confused because both weddings had similar flowers and colors but each was customized to the couples design ideas. Below is the wedding cake for our Bride Jessica. To say that she was "hands on" and so was her mother is an understatement. This cake was not only decorated by our Designer Alanna but Jessica's mother took control and toss a few blooms on their too!  Jessica's centerpieces were oval shaped designs that were left loose and airy in gold mercury footed bowls. Very elegant and stately, even with the fun loving balloons in the background leading guests to the tented area.   This bouquet was created for our bride Leslie - ranunculus, garden, tea and spray roses with dahlias in shades of creams, peaches and pinks. So pretty, don't you think?   My favorite piece from the weekend, the fireplace mantle for Leslie's wedding. So elegant, country, vintage... You get the vibe!

What's in the Shop This Week ~ Summer Blooms

Image
What better time of year is there than Summer for Flowers ? With so many colorful options, our floral designers are in heaven! Below are the most amazing orange lilies. Everyone loves iris. Although they are a typical spring flower , we seem to be able to get them year round.    Locally grown sunflowers - all I can say is Wow! These are huge and they make me smile just looking at them.    Viburnum berries ~ love the color and texture on these.    Ah, I'm in love with Protea ~ especially these Pincushion variety. So funky and vibrant!    Well, there you have it, just a quick sneak peek into our cooler Mid Summer !
